2009 Conference

John Froiland took over the daunting job of conference chair in 2009 and did a solid job in carrying on the tradition of strong events. Former conference chair, Doug Dowling, got to sit back and enjoy the festivities for the first time in years.

During the opening interfaith sharing session, newcomers to the WCA Fall Conference were invited to form a circle inside the circle of regular conference attendees. Everyone got a chance to greet each other and meet new friends.

Drew Leder, M.D., Ph D., was the principle plenary speaker for the conference, His five-part presentation “Grace-ful Aging: becoming Whole in Life’s Second Half,” was a delightfully informative and encouraging philosophical guide to aging.

WCA President Rick Brewer presided over the annual meeting on the second day of the conference.

David Johnson, D-Min, BCC, entertained with his talk, “Am I Getting Older,” often comically lamenting that his son in-law was “a Yankee…AND a CATHOLIC!” Johnson is the new president-elect of the Association of Professional Chaplains.

Fr. Andrew Nelson, Ph. D. (center) warmed the Audience at the annual WCA banquet with his talk, “Enjoying What We Do.” He is joined after dinner by WCA board member Fr. Gene Pocernich, and David Lichter, president of theNational Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), the co-sponsor of the conference.

Mamoon Syed shared the Islamic view of aging with the conference gathering, drawing on his personal journey with his father.

WCA board member Mark Teslik gave a presentation on “Creativity” during an interfaith sharing session. Mark is the chaplain at the New Lisbon corrections facility.

Rabbinic Pastor Aggie Goldenholz helped facilitate the interfaith sharing and conducted one of the break-out sessions. Aggie is a hospice chaplain.
