This year’s theme:

“Grace-ful Aging:
Becoming Whole In Life’s Second Half”

Participants in this conference will learn:

1. To identify some paradigms conventionally associated with "successful aging" in our culture, and their limitations.

2. To identify alternative models, particularly associated with the spirituality of later life that derive from traditional cultures and values but are finding renewed relevance in contemporary America.

3. To identify new ways to be supportive and empowering of clients, patients and residents who are working through the challenges of aging, illness, and mortality.

Our Presenters:

Penny Andrews, D.Min, M.A., BCC

Penny is chaplain at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. She is a Unitarian-Universalist and ordained Interfaith minister. She has worked extensively with family caregivers.

Gwen Brandfass, M.Div., BCC Gwen is chaplain at Oakwood Village in Madison. She is an ordained pastor of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.

Aggie Goldenholz, BCC

Aggie is a Rabbinic Pastor. Aggie has a Masters Degree in Judaic Studies. She serves as a hospice chaplain for the Visiting Nurses Association in the Aurora Health System.

David Johnson, D. Min., BCC

David is a Certified Supervisor of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education.

He currently serves as the Assistant Director For Operations in the Pastoral Care and Education Department at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is President-Elect of the Association of Professional Chaplains Board, and is a United Methodist.

Drew Leder, M.D., Ph.D.

Drew, our main plenary speaker, is professor of philosophy at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland.

His M.D. is from Yale University School of Medicine. His Ph.D. is in philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He currently is a full professor teaching Western and Eastern Philosophy at Loyola.

Dr. Leder has written many books including

Spiritual Passages: Embracing Life’s Sacred Journey; Sparks of the Divine: Finding Inspiration in Our Everyday World; The Absent Body; The Soul Knows No Bars: Inmates Reflect on Life, Death, and Hope; and Games For The Soul: 40 Playful Ways to Find Fun and Fulfillment in a Stressful World.

Doug Locken, M.Div., BCC

Doug is an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He serves as chaplain at Oakwood Village in Madison.

Paula McKenzie, BCC

Paula is Roman Catholic, and serves as Director of Pastoral Care at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Madison.

Andrew Nelson, Ph.D.

Andrew is an ordained Roman Catholic priest. His service in ministry includes a License in Sacred Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, chaplain supervisor, and teaching at Marian College. He has taught Moral Theology at Saint Francis Seminary where he also served as Academic Dean and then as Rector. He continues to write and lecture on moral and ethical issues.

Mamoon Syed

Mamoon works for Mercy Health System in Janesville in human resources as education/organization director. He is very active in the Madison Muslim community and has helped with the organization of Friday prayer for the Janesville Muslim community.

Mark Teslik, M.Div.

Mark is an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He serves as chaplain at the New Lisbon Correctional Institution in New Lisbon. He has been recommended for BCC status.
